Mission Statement

The Mission

The ethos and purpose of Gordonstoun is encapsulated in our Mission Statement:

"Gordonstoun prepares each student through learning by diverse experience for a full and active role as an international citizen in a changing world".

Fulfilment in the twenty-first century will depend on good judgement as well as skills. Those who are comfortable with innovation, are socially aware and responsible, are flexible and compassionate in equal measure, and are energized by initiative; they will achieve. The fostering of life skills has - and must have - its place alongside sharpening of academic edge and individual successes are celebrated as much as they serve a local, national and the global community.

The Motto

With the Mission established and the goal agreed as the creation of a vibrant, caring society, each of us must stretch ourselves to take responsibility for personal and corporate goals. This is where the concepts of self-belief and self-development are so important, transmitted in compelling form through our Motto:

"Plus est en Vous" - There is more in you (than you think)

This means we do not know the awesome potential that lies - for some deeply buried - in each of us. It takes passion, getting out of our comfort-zone, wanting to know what matters and, embracing challenge in a practical way, to judge what matters. In this way the Mission is given life and is achieved by embracing the Motto.

These are not simply fine words, for Gordonstoun believes it has an environment and a curriculum which gives real and effective meaning to them. The key elements of this way of life are summarised in our Unique Curriculum.
