Academic scholarships
Gordonstoun subscribes to the Common Academic Scholarship Examination. This is designed to select candidates who are currently doing very well at school.
Candidates must normally take all papers (except Latin, Greek, German and Spanish which are optional). Papers are set centrally but are sat and marked at Gordonstoun.
We shall take examination results into account, and, equally:
- outstanding performance and potential in one or two areas; or
- a high level of ability in a range of subjects.
We also place considerable emphasis on candidates' reports from their present schools.
Candidates will sit written papers at Gordonstoun as follows:

All-Round Scholarships
These are awarded to candidates who possess and demonstrate clear all-round strengths.
Successful candidates must show academic competence and clear potential in other spheres, particularly sporting and creative. You will find a full set of criteria below.
Candidates will take by way of qualification, our own examinations based very closely on the Common Entrance syllabus, as follows:

- General Paper
- History/Geography/Science
Wednesday 25 February 2009
- Art Candidates and Music Candidates only

Criteria for All-Round Scholarship candidates
Candidates must meet the following three criteria:
- A projected average in our papers based on Common Entrance work of 60%.
- Either
- Outstanding talent (potential regional or national honours) in one sport; or pronounced talent (first team level) in several sports
or
- Pronounced talent in one or more artistic spheres, for example, music, art, drama or design. We would also consider Information Technology in this category.
(We would consider a combination of 2(a) and 2(b) for an award.)
- A positive and favourable character report on the candidate from the candidate's Head, including the candidate's potential for personal development. We place considerable emphasis on this.

Music Scholarships
Candidates must show both potential as instrumentalists and a genuine enthusiasm for music.
Candidates must attend music auditions on Wednesday 25 February 2009. They must also qualify for admission to the School through:
- the Common Entrance Examination; or
- the Gordonstoun Examination, for candidates who have not attended prep schools.
Scholarships are normally valued at 10% of the fees. Further assistance is possible in cases of need.

Art Bursaries
Candidates must demonstrate outstanding artistic potential by:
- presenting a portfolio; and
- attending an interview.
Interviews will take place on Wednesday 25 February 2009.
Candidates must also qualify for admission to the School through:
- the Common Entrance Examination (Spring Term); or
- the Gordonstoun Examination, for candidates who have not attended prep schools.
Art Bursaries are normally valued between £1,000 and £2,000 a year.

Service Bursaries
The Heath Jary Sheridan Patterson Trust may provide bursaries of up to one third fees for the children of Royal Navy or Merchant Navy personnel.
Candidates must also qualify for admission to the School through:
- the Common Entrance Examination; or
- the Gordonstoun Examination, for candidates who have not attended prep schools.
We regard as important the report from each candidate's present school.

The Kenya Scholarship
This is a special award for candidates who are:
- resident in Kenya; and
- attend an Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS) School in Kenya.
Candidates may be submitted for an Academic Scholarship, an All-Round Scholarship, or both of these.
We shall pay special attention to the Head's report on each candidate.
Candidates will not normally have to travel to Gordonstoun for interview.

Who can enter?
Lower School Scholarships and bursaries are on offer to students who:
- were born after 1 September 1995;
- are from any educational background; and
- intend entering Gordonstoun in Autumn Term 2009.
Allowance is made for boys and girls whose present school does not prepare candidates for the examination.

When are scholarship and bursary competitions held?
We shall invite candidates for All Round scholarships to Gordonstoun for three days from Monday 23 February 2009.
Candidates will sit examinations and complete interviews. They will also experience life at Gordonstoun at first hand.
Candidates for other awards will spend one complete day at Gordonstoun, on Wednesday 25 February 2009.
Candidates for Academic Scholarships will be invited to attend Gordonstoun for three days from Monday 23 February 2009.
