General Information on Gordonstoun
Gordonstoun School is known for the wide range of activities that it provides for girls and boys throughout the School's 8-18 age range. It has first-class facilities for these activities which include, in addition to all the normal subjects and many outdoor pursuits, expeditions, seamanship and a wide variety of rescue services.
The creative life of the School is vibrant and well developed, with Drama, Art, Music and Technology central to the life and ethos of Gordonstoun. There are opportunities for staff to contribute both in the role of expert or as an enthusiastic amateur.
Staff are deeply committed and during term work throughout the week, including weekends. The variety and range of our activities, coupled with a real commitment to work, indicate the School's aim to educate the whole person.
Gordonstoun School stands in 200 acres of woodland, within walking distance of sandstone cliffs and sandy beaches on the beautiful coast of the Moray Firth in Scotland. Six miles away is the historic city of Elgin. Lossiemouth nearby is well known for its picturesque harbour, fine golf courses and Royal Air Force Station. The City of Aberdeen is about two hours' drive away, while an hour's drive takes you to the ski resort of Aviemore at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is forty miles away and is itself only about an hour away from London (Gatwick) by air.
Please note that Gordonstoun School is a non-smoking campus.
The School sets out the policies and procedures for all employees within their Staff Handbook. All successful applicants will be provided with access to this Handbook and part of the induction will be focusing on these policies and procedures.
Applicants should note that offers of employment may be subject to:-
- Pre-employment health screening
For certain posts within the School there may be particular requirements in terms of health and fitness. For all other posts we require certain pieces of information to ensure that we are meeting our obligations under the Equality Act 2010 in terms of adjustments to the workplace. It may also be necessary to seek further medical advice as part of this health screening.
- Disclosure Scotland (Criminal Records) Checks Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme
Successful candidates will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check. The School pays the fee for this.
- Satisfactory Employment References
Applicants are required to provide two employment references. References are taken up prior to interview. Applicants should advise their referees that contact from the School is a possibility.
- Right to live and work in the UK
Employers must ensure that any prospective employee is legally entitled to live and work in the UK. Applicants will be required to provide documentary evidence, at the interview stage, in line with United Kingdom Border Agency guidelines.
- Education, Qualifications and Registration
For applicants who apply for posts that require specific qualifications and registration, any offer of appointment will be subject to applicants providing evidence of such qualifications and registration at interview.
- Occupational Requirements in respect of Age and Gender
As our students are aged up to 18 years, the School has set an age requirement for applicants for certain posts, where stated, to be aged over 21 years. Please note that for some posts, which will be clearly stated, only male or female applicants can apply. We believe that these are necessary and legitimate aims and that restricting the age or gender of the applicants, for certain specific posts, is an appropriate means of achieving that aim.
