It may be called soccer by some but, in the north of Scotland, football is the name of the game.
Football at Gordonstoun has grown hugely in popularity over the past few years. We have as many as 50 senior boys taking part in twice-weekly activities during the autumn and spring terms.
Also learning their ball skills at an early age are the junior boys of Aberlour House who all participate in weekly lessons.
Coaching is based on ball-work but all sessions with seniors and juniors have full scale practice matches, which are always keenly contested!
The grass pitches are kept in excellent condition, so much so that all the County Schools Cup finals are played here at the end of the season.
Although the grass pitches are available all the year round we have the luxury of a floodlit Astroturf with a full size pitch.
Our senior boys play in the County Schools League with nine other schools, playing home and away. We also enter the Scottish Cup and the North of Scotland Cup.
Providing an entirely different flavour is the Scottish Independent Schools Cup which we play in throughout the season. Six matches are played against the nearest Independent schools with the top two going through to the national knock-out competition.
There is a huge incentive for the two finalists in this tournament with the final being played under floodlights in Edinburgh at the ground of SPL club Heart of Midlothian (Tynecastle).
Our junior boys also get the opportunity to play against a youth team from Aberdeen FC who train twice-weekly at the school.
All in all, we have a very busy, but always enjoyable, football season here at Gordonstoun School.
