Captain Tom Gardner - Round Square 1999
Captain Tom Gardner (Round Square 1999) returned safe and sound from Afghanistan in mid-October after a six-month tour.
Recently, at a dinner of the Institute of Directors, in London on 12th November 2009, Tom was presented with The Royal Signals Institution Silver Medal in recognition of his ‘…outstanding individual achievement in the Corps.’ Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, Chief of Defence Staff, made the presentation. His citation read that ‘During some of the toughest fighting yet seen in Helmand, Capt. Gardner planned and orchestrated an Electronic Attack, he was however, at his very best when ground call signs declared troops in contact. His ability was hugely impressive and undoubtedly saved many lives’. It went on to say that 'His staff work was used as best practice for others throughout theatre to imitate, and Headquarters ISAF described him as the best EW (Electronic Warfare) Operations Officer in Afghanistan.’
This represents quite an achievement and the GA passes on its warmest congratulations to Tom for a very difficult job extremely well done.
