Debbie Newman - Hopeman 1984

Debbie in UgandaDebbie meeting HRH The Earl of Wessex Seven years ago Debbie Newman (Hopeman 1984) travelled to Uganda as part of a teacher training programme. Working in rural areas opened her eyes to the harsh economics of aid and the tragedy of acceptance when children died for lack of simple medicines and basic health care. As a response to all that she saw Debbie set up “Helping Hands in Uganda” as a charity which aimed to bring health and value to the many children she had seen. Using the three basics of health education, disease prevention and treatment she has seen life change for thousands of children. Debbie has also been working with children and communities in the UK. In the spirit of Gordonstoun she has encouraged individuals to not just learn about what goes on in Uganda but to get involved too! In June 2010 she celebrated six years of Helping Hands with one of the linked communities in Oxfordshire. She was thrilled when HRH The Earl of Wessex KC KGVO attended the special day.
