Sarah Cowderoy - Windmill 2008
The Gordonstoun Association has heard from Sarah Cowderoy (Windmill 2008) and her adventures as an Assistant Teacher in Kenya.
Through hard work and fundraising Sarah is now volunteering, along with a group of 14 others, in a school in Kenya.
She is living in very basic accommodation, with no carpets, curtains, intermittent electric and no running water...but, she is privileged enough to be working in the heart of a community in Kenya, based in the stunning Rift Valley – where the school is tucked away among the tea plantations and foothills of the South West.
Sarah is working at Dedza Primary School which has 2158 students and 34 members of staff. She is teaching 23 lessons a week including English and Creative Arts.
The children will receive a very basic education of only Maths, English and Science.
Sarah and the other volunteers are able to create fun, excitement and a creative side of teaching, some of Sarah’s group have been brave enough to take on some PE lessons too!...PE in Africa is incredibly popular. One volunteer described 1000 strong class of students - (the entire school in fact) who turned up for after school games lessons, with only tennis ball - it turned into British bull dog, with a difference!
Weekends are for exploring the wider community and traveling with the rest of the group further into Africa.
