Ronnie Berry (1954 - 2012)
It is with great sadness for the whole Gordonstoun community that we announce that music teacher, Mr Ronnie Berry, died suddenly on Wednesday 1st August.
Mr Berry has been teaching at Gordonstoun for 12 years. In that time he has really led the 'contemporary' music-making at Gordonstoun. As well as teaching electric, acoustic and bass guitar Ronnie has coached numerous rock bands. Every year one of Gordonstoun's musical highlights is the Rock Show which has been enjoyed by performers and revellers alike. Ronnie has always been absolutely instrumental in the success of this annual extravaganza. He always enjoyed getting involved with the many Gordonstoun musicals, most notably playing alongside students in ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Les Miserables’ and most recently ‘Spring Awakening’. He has also accompanied a number of Gordonstoun shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which I know were always a huge delight for him.
Ronnie Berry was a calm, level headed professional who always had his students’ best interests at heart. His enormously eclectic taste in music meant he could turn from teaching the lead guitar part in a heavy rock classic, to accompanying a light Eric Clapton ballad, to performing the orchestral bass part in our chamber orchestra. He was always very generous with his time and his students never went without the help they needed. Ronnie Berry will be dearly missed by everyone in the Music Department and the wider Gordonstoun community. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts go out to his wife, Karen, and all those that were closest to Ronnie Berry.
There will be a memorial service/celebration of Ronnie’s life at St James’ Church, Lossiemouth at 3.30pm on Thursday 9th August. All who knew Ronnie are very welcome to attend.
