I look forward to meeting you hopefully at some stage in the near future.

Assessment and Scholarships

We hold an Assessment and Scholarship Weekend in the Spring Term when pupils are invited to spend a night in the School, even if they are not intending to board when they become pupils in the School. The emphasis during this informal weekend is on fun and it is a good opportunity for interested parents and pupils to experience the school in a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

Assessment is used purely as a benchmark and standardised tests in Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning are used. There will also be an opportunity to produce a piece of creative writing on a suggested theme.

The Head of the Junior School will also assess each pupil on the basis of:

  • a report from the pupil's previous school; and
  • an interview.

Talented musicians are also invited to apply for the Neil Wylie Memorial Scholarship for Music award. Candidates will have the opportunity to demonstrate their abillity during the Assessment Weekend.

Children who have been specifically entered for a Scholarship will be assessed throughout the weekend on the basis of the assessment tests above and their ability to demonstrate a particular flair and suitability to life in Aberlour House.

Scholarships are available when pupils enter at the start of each year. Pupils may take the Scholarship tests and exams only once at Junior School.

All pupils are eligible to take a Scholarship to the Senior School at 13 years or over.

Scholarships awarded to Junior School students will normally – after a thorough review – continue into the Senior School.

Assessment day for 2007/8 is Saturday 9 February 2008.

The final date for returning application forms is 25 January 2008.

Each candidate or their parents should inform the candidate's present Headteacher before proceeding with an application.

Moving on to Senior School

We carry out Junior School assessments in conjunction with the Senior School.

This means that parents can assume that their children, once accepted, can move seamlessly to the Senior School.

Students who intend doing so must, however, take a test, based on the Common Entrance Examination.

This both keeps students up to the mark and helps to place them in the Senior School.
