Honour for Mark Pyper

Mark Pyper OBEThe whole Gordonstoun community are delighted that former Principal, Mark Pyper, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to education.

This is a prestigious accolade for both Mark and Gordonstoun and one which is not often bestowed upon people in independent education.

During Mark’s 21 year career as Principal of Gordonstoun (1990 – 2011) he witnessed many changes to the state of education as a whole and within the independent sector in particular; none more so than the increasing requirement to satisfy the appropriate statutory bodies, ie HMIe, Care Commission and the Charity Regulator. During the most recent HMIe inspection in June 2009, Gordonstoun achieved Excellent or Very Good in all five Quality Indicators. Of the role of the Principal they said: “The principal provides inspiring leadership and is highly respected. He encourages staff and young people to take the lead and show initiative in a variety of situations and values their contributions to school life.”

Gordonstoun’s new Principal Simon Reid said “Mark Pyper helped to develop Hahnian educational philosophy and made Gordonstoun into the pre-eminent practitioner of holistic education. He richly deserves this award. We will continue to nurture, develop and adapt our unique style of education so that Gordonstoun alumni are fully prepared for the challenges of the modern world.”

His honour comes at a time when Mark and his wife, Jenny, have just retired to a less hectic life style in Oxford but he will, we are sure, continue to influence and advise young people for many years to come.
