Sports Centre Opening
On Thursday 21 March 2013 we were honoured to welcome back OG Olympians Heather Stanning MBE and Zara Phillips MBE to open two important new facilities that will change the shape of sport and physical education in the School for generations to come. In the morning they opened a hard sports surface at Aberlour House (see separate News item) before heading to the senior school to open the George Welsh Sports Centre.
First, though, Heather and Zara went back to Plewlands House where they made a presentation to their former Housemistress Georgie Souter, who retires this summer following a remarkable 38 years of teaching service at Gordonstoun. They then went on to watch football and hockey being played against Robert Gordon’s College as well as inter-House netball being played in the new Lilton hall. Finally, it was time for them to officially open the George Welsh Sports Centre, named after another chief guest of the day, George Welsh - head of PE for nearly 20 years from 1965.
Zara and Heather both spoke with affection about their sporting memories of the School, their recollections of time spent being coached by George Welsh, and also the impact that their schooling had had on their subsequent achievements. The ceremony ended with the unveiling of a plaque in the entrance foyer of the new centre, before tours were given to the many donors and friends of the School who had journeyed to mark this important occasion.
Tea in the refectory then brought to a close a memorable day for the whole School.
