Spring Term 2017

Fire Service Call Out

The Gordonstoun Volunteer Unit was called out on Tuesday to a significant gorse / grass fire in the Covesea Links area of the Moray Firth coast.  The Unit was paged at approximately 10.45am and returned the station at 4.00pm.  Most of their time was spent at the Silver Sands caravan park where residents had been evacuated because of fears that the fire might reach the caravans.

Six fire appliances were initially mobilised to this incident, but these were supplemented by other appliances as the incident developed, including water carriers from both Inverness and Buckie and the all-terrain vehicle from Elgin. The Gordonstoun students worked closely with the retained firefighters from Forres, operating hoses and back-pack sprayers to put out the flames initially and later for damping down the whole area. The Forres Watch Manager praised the students for their hard work and enthusiasm.  The Incident Commander was Station Manager Gordon Morrison - he debriefed our crew after the incident and thanked us for our rapid response and the valuable support we had provided for our SFRS colleagues.

On Wednesday afternoon the Unit was called out to work with an Elgin crew in the area of the golf driving range, near to the lighthouse. The all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was being used which gave the students the opportunity to experience some more unfamiliar fire-fighting equipment.  On Thursday morning they were paged at 0630 and spent a total of six hours at the Wee Links pitch and put course, working with crews from Elgin, Lossiemouth and Forres.  Most of their time was spent tackling hot-spots that were springing up amongst the gorse, having been fanned by the strong easterly winds.

It was hard, dirty work, but the Gordonstoun crew were very pleased to be involved.
