Sir James Weatherall KCVO KBE, 1936-2018
Everyone at Gordonstoun has been greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Sir James Weatherall last week.
Sir James was Chairman of the Board of Governors from 1996 to 2003,during which time he oversaw the amalgamation of the Boards of Gordonstoun and Aberlour House and paved the way for the eventual relocation of Aberlour House to the Gordonstoun campus in 2004.
Before serving as Chairman of the Board, Sir James had enjoyed a distinguished career. He attended Gordonstoun as a student from 1949 to 1953 before joining the Royal Navy. During his naval career he served as commander of HMS Andromeda during the 1982 Falklands Conflict and took command of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in 1985. On his promotion to Vice Admiral in 1989, he became the Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1991 and joined the Gordonstoun Board in 1993, taking over as Chairman three years’ later.
In addition, Sir James was a trustee of the Gordonstoun Foundation and was also Chairman of Governors at Boxhill School in Surrey, possibly the only person to chair the boards of two Round Square schools simultaneously. After stepping down as Chairman of the Board at Gordonstoun, he served as Warden of the School from 2004.
A memorial service will be held for Sir James next month, at which the Headmaster, Titus Edge, will represent the school with former Principal Mark Pyper and Ben Goss, Keeper of the Gordonstoun Family.
