Summer Term 2018

Fire Call-out

The smoke from the fire at Hopeman had been visible from the School campus from approximately 8.30pm.The Gordonstoun firefighters were paged at almost 10.00pm.  A crew of five, with Mr Clarke as driver, responded to the callout.  There were at least six appliances in attendance, including the ATV (all-terrain vehicle) from Elgin, the water carrier from Buckie (a tanker carrying a large volume of water) and the welfare unit from Huntly (mobile kitchen and toilet facilities).

The students were in attendance until approximately 2.30am and their principle job was to work their way along the western periphery of the area that had been ablaze and deal with any hot-spots and smouldering vegetation, using the high pressure hose-reel. The work was hot and dirty as they had to drag the hose though the charred remains of gorse bushes.

After leaving the incident they then had to make a trip into Elgin to refuel the appliance and, when they got back to the Station there were checks and cleaning to be done.  The crew were eventually dismissed to approximately 3.30am and were given a long-lie in the morning to make up for their missing sleep!
