Michael B Mavor CVO MA Headmaster 1979-1990
It is with very great sadness that the School community heard of the death of Michael Mavor on Tuesday 8 December in Peru. This has come as a particular shock as Michael had been present at the Gordonstoun Association Advent Service in Haddington only two weeks before.
Michael was Gordonstoun’s youngest Headmaster, being just 32 at the time of his appointment in 1979. He steered Gordonstoun with great skill and success throughout the 1980s before moving to be Headmaster at Rugby School in 1990 and then of Loretto, his own old School, in 2001. When he retired in 2008 Michael had led three of Britain’s greatest schools during a remarkable span of twenty-nine years. He was appointed CVO in 1993 and was Chairman of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference in 1997.
Michael’s contribution to the development and prosperity of Gordonstoun was immense and he will be remembered with great affection for touching the lives of so many young people. All members of the School community mourn his loss and we extend our thoughts, prayers and sympathy to Elizabeth, his widow, and Veronica and Alexander at this extremely difficult time.
An announcement about a Memorial Service for Michael will be made in due course.
