U18 and First XV reports by Mr Steve Brown

21 March

Gordonstoun 1st XV vs Robert Gordon's

Gordonstoun welcomed Robert Gordon's for the final of the North Schools' Cup. Matches against Robert Gordon's are always tough ones and this was no exception. Injuries abounded as Robert Gordon's fought hard to achieve a runaway score; however, the Gordonstoun defence held solid, only allowing the Robert Gordon's backs across the line on three occasions. Final Score: Gordonstoun 3 Robert Gordon's 17

Gordonstoun 1st XV vs Aberdeen

The 1st XV squad

The opening First XV rugby match of 2018 was an absolute thriller and set the bar very high for the rest of the season. In a tense contest between two well matched sides, Aberdeen took the lead with five minutes to play only for Gordonstoun to strike back deep into ‘red time’ with the last play of the game to level the scores at 31 each. The icing was applied to the cake when Ben P (son of OG Justin and one of three ‘OGlets’ in the starting line up) slotted the touch line conversion.

Thank You and Well Done!

Mr Ranald Baird

Thank you to everyone who ensures the rugby club runs smoothly and well done for the success that we have achieved as a school. Today we gained the wins we needed and more, taking us to the top of the Lancer Conference, something we have not managed before.

It has taken considerable commitment from all of the staff involved to get us to this stage, including long trips to Dundee and Perth. Their time sitting on a bus, standing on a touchline or freezing at training is greatly appreciated and I know the boys feel the same way as they thrive off the opportunities presented to them week in, week out.

A particular well done to the U15 team, who finished as league winners with a great performance yesterday to top it all off. Also to the U13 Aberlour team who have really struggled this season with a lot of inexperienced players. They have worked incredibly hard and to get a 38-15 win yesterday is a perfect way to end the term! Well done to all of those boys.

Every team has chipped in along the way. The U16s lost 80-0 earlier in the season against Dundee and then turned it around to win 46-23 later on. Those 3 points turned out to be vital. The 1st XV turned around a defeat to Ellon earlier in the season to get a resounded 40-12 win yesterday and again finished the term with a fine performance.

Referees cannot be forgotten as the matches could not run without them. Mr Schonken rarely turns down a request and Mr Brown put in a two game shift yesterday. We have had the pleasure of developing some student referees and I am grateful to Ben S, Sam D and George B for their help with this.

Thank you especially to all the coaches who have done so much with the teams. It is so pleasing to see us come out on top having presented ourselves as a professional unit playing with the utmost sportsmanship throughout.

Gordonstoun vs Dundee RFC

Gordonstoun U16 XV vs Dundee
On Sunday Gordonstoun welcomed Dundee Rugby up for the return fixture that saw Gordonstoun suffer a heavy defeat earlier in the season.  It had been a focused week in training and this showed in the opening exchanges, as Gordonstoun controlled the tempo of the play and possession of the ball. Within the opening 10 minutes Gordonstoun had scored some quick fire tries and established a 10-0 lead. Lapses in defensive concentration throughout the match allowed Dundee to come back into the game with some easy scores. With a few minutes to spare Dundee crashed over to tie the game up at 31-31. Credit must go to the Gordonstoun side who worked their way back up the pitch, again playing structured rugby and a well worked play was finished off in style by stand off Robbie MacG. The conversion was missed, but it was the final kick of the game as Gordonstoun ran out deserved 36-31 winners.

Gordonstoun U15 XV vs Dundee
Gordonstoun continued their dominance in the league table with a commanding victory over Dundee. From the first kick the tempo and flare of the play was too much for the opposition. A strong set piece allowed the powerful Gordonstoun runners to cross the gain line time after time and the backs then attacked at pace. Gordonstoun U15 now look forward to hosting Mackie RFC this weekend.

Gordonstoun U14 XV vs Dundee
The Gordonstoun U14s responded well to last week’s poor performance and played a much better style of rugby. Gordonstoun attacked with more width and did not allow the opposition to structure their defence. Several team tries came as a result of slick handling and good decision making. Final score was Gordonstoun 43-13 Dundee.

Gordonstoun U15 XV vs Perthshire RFC
Report by Mr Doug Cooper, Sports Coach

Gordonstoun made the long journey south on Sunday morning for a top of the table encounter against Perthshire. Gordonstoun narrowly lost the early season fixture and there was a determination to avenge their only defeat so far. It was a perfect afternoon for playing rugby but the journey took its toll and Gordonstoun started slowly. However, the home side also struggled with there continuity and the early encounters were scrappy.

After 10 minutes Gordonstoun threw off the shackles to break the deadlock. There were a couple of positional changes to the Gordonstoun starting set up and the switch of Alvaro M to No 8 proved to be most effective - after some excellent rucking and quick ball he broke through the defence and powered over for the first score. From that point Gordonstoun constantly applied pressure, whether in attack or defence the home side had to live off scraps of possession and, when they did get the ball, the Gordonstoun defence was so effective the home side could not threaten the try line. The flood gates started to open, Will B, scored a try from a driving maul following a line out 10 meters from the try line. Conrad H ran strongly all afternoon and picked up a couple of tries. Hugh B scored out wide, and kicked accurately to convert 5 tries in total.

Comfortably in the lead at halftime, Gordonstoun nevertheless kept to the game plan and never let the home side off the hook. After a brief lull in the scoring Alvaro M again broke the home defence to score. Hugh B scored from the kick-off beating five defenders and running 25 meters to the line. There were further scoring contributions from Conrad H and Angus GR to bring the game to a close. It was a satisfying victory and takes Gordonstoun to the top of the Lancer Conference U15s league table.

Gordonstoun 1st XV vs Dundee RFC
The First XV continued their winning start to the season with a convincing 51-14 victory over Dundee Rugby in  league fixture.

U15 XV vs Dundee RFC
Gordonstoun made the long trip to Dundee on Sunday and came away with a well deserved victory. Playing with the elements and slope in the first half, it was the away side who started brightly. Showing no sign of the coach trip, they opened the scoring through Centre, Conrad H, in his first game of the season. This was followed a few minutes later by a try from No 8, Will B. Inside Centre, Hugh B, kicked accurately all afternoon, converting a try and a penalty to put Gordonstoun in command after the first 20 minutes. The home side, who had seen very little possession, sprang into life with a wonderful move from first phase to score under the posts. Not deterred, the visitors hit back again to take a commanding lead into half time.

The Gordonstoun forwards were winning the breakdown with great driving play from Alvaro M and Murdo L and, in his first full game, Leon K had full control of the line out. However, after the break, the home side started to get into the match. They looked more threatening and were using the wind well to keep Gordonstoun pinned in their own half. The defence was tested but the line speed of the backs meant that Dundee struggled to put the phases together. But with some excellent continuity the visitors fought their way back into the opposition half and managed further scores from Conrad and Will. As the match neared its conclusion Gordonstoun tired and the away side managed to score three tries in the last twenty minutes but by then the game was won. Special mention to must go to Freddy G and Leon MW who were both outstanding on their rugby debut.
