Scholarships and Financial Assistance

Gordonstoun operates a policy of open access, committed to educating young people regardless of nationality, background or financial resources. The School therefore encourages applications whether for scholarships or for places from any young person who is capable of benefiting from a Gordonstoun education and who is committed to enhancing the life of the community. Approximately one-third of our students have some form of reduction in fees and a small number pay no fees at all.

There are three potential sources of financial assistance. These are scholarships, fee reductions (bursaries), and external assistance.

Scholarships

Scholarships are competitive awards involving examination, interview and assessment. There are scholarship opportunities at three entry levels:

Scholarships are not normally available for those entering the School at Year 10 level or for those already in Year 12. No more than 10% is ever awarded purely on academic, or other specific, merit. However, additional awards (fee reductions) can be given, based on means testing.

The parents of those who achieve a 10% scholarship are asked to release this to another candidate if they do not require the support. A student's continued entitlement to a scholarship depends on his or her continued good progress.

Scholarships - designated funds

Designated funds are legacies and endowments which provide scholarships for children in specific circumstances. Gordonstoun has access to means-tested funding for children of currently serving Royal Navy or Merchant Navy personnel; children resident in Perthshire, mid-Wales, the Channel Islands, and Kenya, and for children of fishing families from the former county of Banff. The School also operates in co-operation with two external charities which offer scholarships for students with specific aptitudes.

Fee reductions

Fee reductions can supplement scholarship awards but can also be made available to non-scholarship entrants.

How do I apply?

Parents of students who are awarded scholarships will be advised what to do next and will be “matched” with appropriate funds such as the geographic funds mentioned above. A parent of any other applicant may request a means testing form after they have completed the initial admissions formalities. Although we are determined to help as many families as we can, there is a limit to the funds available, and a successful application is not guaranteed.

External assistance

There are several charitable trusts and organisations dedicated to helping parents with the cost of school fees. Each has its own criteria, and applications are made by parents or guardians, not by Gordonstoun. Many parents have identified suitable sources of assistance by careful internet research. Information on Education Maintenance Allowances (EMAs), including eligibility and applications, can be accessed through the Moray Council website.
