Windmill Lodge

Windmill Lodge

Welcome to Windmill Lodge

Originally a boys' boarding house, but since 1974, converted to one of the three girls' houses, Windmill Lodge was built onto the old, stone estate kennels. The main part of the structure was shipped across the Moray Firth, where it had formerly been used as army barracks. The building is a wooden single storey structure but has been extensively modernised since Prince Charles' time here as a pupil although he might still recognise his study, which is now traditionally used as the House Captain's room.

At Windmill Lodge, you are guaranteed a genuinely warm welcome. Windmill girls are extremely supportive, and proud of their House and the community in which they live. They are always keen to make sure all students feel the same. This will be my fourth year as Housemistress and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. We’ll be sharing this lovely home with the kitten, Bilbo and his Mum, Poppy; not to mention the goldfish and Mrs Black’s cats!

To ensure the girls' well-being there is a group of staff that are always on hand for help, advice or just a chat on the sofa! AHM Ms Capstick, Matrons, Mrs Tall and Mrs Ball whose hot chocolate brews and home bakes are  legendary; and the team of tutors who work tirelessly with me to fully support the House and the girls. There is a tutor on duty every weekday night between 1845 and 2200 during which time tutees have the chance to discuss everything and anything.

As Housemistress, my aim is to promote an open environment; encouraging honesty, integrity and a commitment to boarding life and all that it entails. Gordonstoun has great opportunities for new experiences, and I hope that the girls can make the most of as many as they are able while they are here.

After lessons the tea room is full to overflow with young ladies chatting, giggling, gossiping and getting ready for activities. We are on one level at Windmill and therefore see each other on a regular basis so informal chats are the best. We support each other, help each other and encourage each other. Nothing is irrelevant. Each Windmill lady is unique and brings something new and valuable to the House. That is why it is such an amazing place to live and we can truly call it home.

Having been involved with boarding in other schools in England, I am very aware of the importance of a solid and steady base from which the girls can develop. Our aim, as staff, is to provide this and then to encourage progression in each girl, in every possible area that we are able.

At the end of a long day, Windmill is home and it is good to know that many girls from all different backgrounds and cultures, walk back after supper or activities knowing that it is theirs and that they love being here.
