Windmill Lodge

Windmill Lodge

Welcome to Windmill Lodge

Originally a boys' boarding house, but since 1974, converted to one of the three girls' houses, Windmill Lodge was built onto the old, stone estate kennels. The main part of the structure was shipped across the Moray Firth, where it had formerly been used as army barracks. The building is a wooden single storey structure but has been extensively modernised since Prince Charles' time here as a pupil although he might still recognise his study, which is now traditionally used as the House Captain's room.

Our House is located at the east end of the campus, in close proximity to the Performing Arts, Services and Sports Centres. It is purpose designed around a quad area and as such provides the girls with cosy, comfortable rooms and an environment that is welcoming and inclusive.

At Windmill Lodge, you are guaranteed a genuinely warm welcome. Windmill girls are extremely supportive, and proud of their House and the community in which they live. They are always keen to make sure all students feel the same. Having been a tutor in Windmill for a year, the House is now my home too and the girls share it with my son, Christian (when home from London University), my daughter, Mivvi, our Westie pup, Heulyn and the kitten, Poppy.

To ensure the girls' well being there is a group of staff that are always on hand for help, advice or just a chat on the sofa! AHM Mrs Black, Matron Mrs Tall, whose hot chocolate brews are a legend, and the team of tutors who work tirelessly with me to fully support the House and the girls. There is a tutor on duty every weekday night between 1845 and 2200 during which time tutees have the chance to discuss everything and anything.

As  Housemistress, my aim is to promote an open environment; encouraging honesty and a commitment to boarding life and all that it entails. Gordonstoun has great opportunities for new experiences, and I hope that the girls can make the most of as many as they are able while they are here.

Having been involved with boarding in other schools, I am very aware of the importance of a solid and steady base from which the girls can develop. Our aim, as staff, is to provide this and then to encourage progression in each girl, in every possible area that we are able.

At the end of a long day, Windmill is home and it is good to know that many girls from all different backgrounds and cultures, walk back after supper or activities knowing that it is theirs and that they love being here.
