Mountain Rescue
The aims of the present day Mountain Rescue (MR) Service at Gordonstoun are:
- To foster a knowledge and appreciation of the mountains of Scotland.
- To train students as future mountaineers.
- To use this trained body as a support group for other School expeditions.
- To assist the Police with searches and evacuations in the Grampian Region and the mountains of the North.
Over the last few years MR have assisted with incidents in the Cairngorm area and have built up a good relationship with the rescue services in the locality.
Members of the Service must realise that if they are to fulfil a useful role within the group, a certain commitment is required. A minimum of two training expeditions a term is required and mid-week sessions can be extended.
The Mountain Rescue Service operates througout the year. This means that equipment can have to contend with rather harsher conditions than on the usual School expeds. The basic School equipment is adequate but boots, in particular, should be robust enough to cope with deep snow and the wearing of light crampons. A pair of gaiters would also be advisable. Equipment can be hired from the School's Linen Room and advice is always available from the MR staff.
