Ocean Spirit of Moray

Ocean Spirit of Moray (OSM) is a fully equipped, ocean-going yacht built to the exacting safety standards laid down by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency. She is capable of fast, safe passages in a range of weather conditions.

OSM is owned by Gordonstoun School and its primary function is as a Sail Training Vessel for the students, both Junior and Senior, and is designed to introduce and train them for the sea.  The permanent staff on board are used to working with and instructing inexperienced sailors.

All students undergo a programme of seamanship, as part of the curriculum, on the school’s cutters at the local harbour at Hopeman prior to taking part in voyages on OSM.

Ocean Spirit complies with - and in many cases exceeds - the requirements of the Code of Practice for Sail Training Vessels.

She is equipped with the very latest navigation and communications equipment.

Life on board Ocean Spirit

All crew members are expected to participate in sailing and other duties. On some voyages participants should be prepared for an extended time at sea.

The Ocean Spirit's experienced Skipper and Mates train students in all aspects of crewing the vessel. They also ensure that help and advice is always on hand.

When under way, the on-board staff organise the crew in a rotating watch system so everyone has a chance to both sail the boat and to rest.

Other tasks, such as domestic and cooking duties, are shared between the watches.

It may be possible for students to complete the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew certificate on board the Ocean Spirit.

Our ability to instruct to higher levels of the RYA scheme will depend on the experience and ability of crew members and the opportunities that present themselves on each voyage.

Accommodation

Crew accommodation comprises a basic but comfortable semi open-plan cabin with a bunk and limited locker space for each crew member.

On-board facilities include:

Washing facilities do not include fresh water showers and during extended passages non-essential water use may be limited.

Charter

From time to time it may be possible to charter Ocean Spirit of Moray fully crewed for private or corporate use. The cost of the charter would cover:

Charter costs do not cover:

Personal safety equipment and wet weather gear is provided on board.

Bursary funding may be available to meet part of the cost. This applies to students under 25 who would otherwise be unable for financial reasons to take part. Please contact us to find out more.
