Challenge

Challenge

What we mean by challenge

The concept of challenge reflects our motto: Plus est en Vous' - 'There is more in you than you think'. Challenge is central to the Gordonstoun ethos.

Challenge comes in many guises just as it does in later life.  Whether it be academic work, sport, the performing arts or any other aspect of School life, many outside our comfort zone, it is an important aspect of personal development.

Gordonstoun's outdoor education and learning programme of expeditions, sail training and adventure activities is specifically designed to challenge students to build on their strengths, recognise their limitations and develop their full potential.

Placing students in a different context to one they normally find themselves in, is a powerful learning tool. The learning that comes from outdoor education is not just acquisition of new knowledge, skills and information but a deeper level of personal understanding that becomes embodied within individuals.

Gordonstoun's outdoor education and learning opportunities provide a range of experiences that enable students to develop the qualities and attributes that they will need to survive and thrive in a changing world.

These key qualities and attributes are:

  • Confidence
  • Creativity
  • Tenacity
  • Good communication skills
  • Adaptability
  • Strong leadership qualities

We are distinctive in ensuring that all students undergo outdoor education throughout their time in the School.

These activities are not optional extras. They are essential to students' personal development plans.

They are also included in School fees.

"It is culpable neglect not to impel young people into experiences."

Kurt Hahn
