Our Founder, Kurt Hahn, described the Moray Firth as "my best schoolmaster"
and sail training is an essential component of Gordonstoun's broad curriculum.
Sail training helps to develop teamwork and leadership skills, which complement personal challenge.
All students in Years 9, 10 and new students in Year 12 undergo seamanship training in cutters from nearby Hopeman harbour.
They learn basic skills in preparation for a voyage off the Scottish coast in the School's own 80-foot sail training vessel, Ocean Spirit of Moray.
The experience is unique in British mainstream education combining the challenge of seas with the development of interpersonal skills, teamwork and leadership.
All Year 10 and 12 students go on a week long sail training voyage in the Summer or Autumn Term.
There are other opportunities to sail on Ocean Spirit during holiday periods, including the Tall Ships Race or equally exciting ventures. Two years ago Ocean Spirit sailed to the Svalbard Archipelago on an unforgettable Arctic Voyage. Last year she once again took part in the Tall Ships Race over to Maloy in the heart of the beautiful norwegian fjiords and this year she was in the Baltic, coming second in her class in the first leg of the Tall Ships Race.
