On Being House Captain
by Robyn, Year 13
I was once told that being House Captain would change the way I act and portray myself to others. I would like to think that as a person, I haven’t changed since becoming House Captain of Plewlands this term, however the way I portray myself definitely has. When you don’t look after yourself or even don’t care what other people say, some notice that and in some cases admire it so therefore copy it. I decided this term that I was not going to let Plewlands or myself down and hopefully become a role model to some girls in the House for doing good and not for doing wrong.

Being allocated the job of House Captain means that I have a certain amount of authority in the House. However, I would like to think and look at this as not a chance to get some girls into trouble, but as a chance to help the girls when they need it or even be there for some of them to have someone to speak to. To start with the role was a lot harder than I had ever anticipated with Mrs. Morton sharing her own jobs with me such as looking after supervised prep and organising events for the House and night and even more. Well, that’s what it felt like, but in actual fact these were just day-to-day jobs for the House Captain. Getting to know everyone and helping new girls settle in is something that has helped me a lot to improve my communication skills, and getting the whole House involved in House events has been a major highlight.
Overall, these first few weeks of being a House Captain have been fun, intimidating, enjoyable and stressful, but they have made me learn a lot and I look forward to learning more and more as this term goes on.
