Weekly News

DRAMA
Last week saw two Year 12 theatre productions. On Tuesday and Wednesday evening parents, guests and students watched our exam productions of ‘DNA’ by Dennis Kelly and ‘Dr Korczak’s Example’ by David Greig. The students performed exceptionally well in these two difficult and somewhat dark productions and the shows were very well received by the audience in Ogstoun Theatre.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Last Thursday Gordonstoun’s Year 10 exchange students visited Edinburgh. For many of them it was also their first sight of snow as they travelled down the A9 to the capital. They had two hours to freely explore the city and enjoy some shopping before a visit to the Scottish Parliament for a live debate whose subject was the review of the environmental impact of a project – democracy and care for the environment in action. This was the last trip for the exchange students who have been at Gordonstoun for three months and who are now heading back to their homes in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, Germany, Canada and the USA.

SIXTH FORM LECTURE
Last Saturday’s guest speaker was Mr Peter Higgins, co-founder of Jermyn Street’s Charles Tyrwhitt which caught the attention of everyone listening. Mr Higgins proved himself to be a very intellectual and skilled entrepreneur by not only putting forward views on how successful businesses run but also demonstrating various business strategies. After listening to the story of the inception of Charles Tyrwhitt, it became very clear that success is not a positive slope but a rather complex web of ups and downs. The lecture proved invaluable for many students in the audience and it was a great pleasure to have such an insightful person speaking to them.

SPORT
Football: Gordonstoun 1st XI win their final game of the season against Milne’s High School, in a well contested match Gordonstoun emerged victorious in their final match of the season, well played to both teams who coped well with a strong wind and difficult playing conditions. Gordonstoun’ penultimate match of the season was a quarter final defeat in the Central Schools’ League Cup to local rivals Elgin Academy.

Netball: This week has been a busy week for netball starting with the final round of the Moray Senior Schools’ League, which saw Gordonstoun awarded 1st place on goal difference. On Saturday, Gordonstoun hosted U14 and U15 A and B teams from Robert Gordon’s College. RGC were a strong squad so we missed out on wins but played some excellent quality netball.  On Monday the Senior 1st VII played one of the top two teams from last year’s Highland and Moray Adult League, winning 51-46 in a very competitive match during which the girls fought consistently and as a team, whilst the U11s played against Moray Mixed in the local Primary League and recorded a good win.
