At Gordonstoun, the wellbeing and protection of children and young people is at the heart of everything we do. Our policies and procedures are based upon the principles that inspire and inform the ‘Getting it right for every child’ approach, in our primary tasks of safeguarding the children in our care, and promoting and developing all aspects of their wellbeing. We are self-reflective in our approach, always seeking out best practice and ready to develop our processes regarding the wellbeing and protection of the young people in our care.
Below are three documents which describe and detail essential information about wellbeing care and child protection procedures at Gordonstoun. One is designed for parents, carers and students, and outlines all key aspects of our wellbeing care, pastoral structures and child protection processes. It assures students, staff, parents and the broader community that the provision of care for all our students is entirely respectful and protective of their privacy, focuses on free and transparent access to the best possible wellbeing support, and facilitates appropriate reporting of concerns.
The second document is an Essential Guidance document received by every member of the teaching, support and management staff at the School, School Guardians and the School Governors, as part of required child protection training. It summarises our key principles, policies, procedures and processes, as well as key points of contact. Every adult employed by the School is contracted to understand, know and follow this guidance in their interaction with and protection of the children and young people in our care.
The third document is our full Wellbeing and Child Protection Policy and Procedures. Gordonstoun’s policy and procedures have been developed to reflect changes in legislation and national policy including the Children's Hearings (Scotland) Act 2011 (implemented in 2013), the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland 2014, and the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014. They are also reflective of our own experience, our commitment to seeking out the best possible models of policy and practice, and to ensuring that all adults working with children and young people are aware of their responsibilities. We await further relevant guidance from Government, including proposed changes to aspects of this legislation relevant to the Named Person service and information sharing. Our full document will not be revised further until full direction and guidance from the Scottish Government has been received.
