Gordonstoun’s eight services offer students the opportunity to be part of the fire or coastguard service. Our expeditions can involve anything from exploring archaeology on a remote Scottish island to learning survival skills while on expeditions around the world. There are really no limits at Gordonstoun. We want every student to aim to be the very best in subjects or activities that fuel their excitement, enthusiasm and internationalism. |
Our unique co-curricular education provides a range of activities both inside and outside the classroom and is designed to spark a ‘passion’ within students to steer them towards realising their dream career.Understanding each student
Our pastoral structures, particularly the house system, enables us to respond proactively to students’ needs. Personalised learner profiles and support plans ensure that students are not only supported academically, but also feel safe, understood, and able to thrive.
The Futures Department support all students in a very holistic and individual way. Working closely with Academic, Pastoral and Learning Support staff, the team are adept in understanding each student’s strengths, weaknesses and personal situations to ensure that they can explore realistic options and make informed decisions.
In Years 9 and 10 students are given the opportunity to take part in ‘grand passion projects’ to help them find the subjects and activities they find most enjoyable, teaching them valuable skills such as patience and an attention to detail.
International and Spiritual Citizenship is a key subject in the curriculum and underpins our Futures careers programme with the study of internationalism and the promotion of the ethos of Gordonstoun founder Kurt Hahn and the Round Square IDEALS. Students are encouraged to explore how they can make a difference with their actions and by supporting causes.
Our ‘Extended Project Qualification’ in Year 12, worth half an A-level, involves supervised research, which could be about something as diverse as the salt industry in South West Scotland.
Developing these skills also helps those students with university aspirations to research courses and build a strong application.
Motivating passions
Financial success should not be the sole motivator for pursuing a particular career. Our mantra is to consistently challenge our young people, guiding them towards studying what they love and motivating them to excel in their passions.
Gordonstoun offers structured, targeted support for competitive pathways, including dedicated sessions for Oxbridge, Medicine and US university applications, and for a growing number of students applying to universities worldwide.
Oxbridge and Russell Group universities continue to be the favoured route with around 3% of last year’s leavers going to Oxbridge.
That said, choices remain notably diverse. To meet changing trends, including increased awareness of student debt and graduate employment challenges, students are urged to consider vocational routes, apprenticeships, gap years and direct entry into employment.
Destination outcomes range from degree apprenticeships with organisations such as DHL to full‑time employment with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
In response, Gordonstoun has recently introduced a deer management diploma, LANTRA‑accredited tractor and chainsaw courses, and the British Wool Board Blue Seal qualification in sheep shearing.
These hands-on courses open doors, helping students to gain real world experience. One of last year’s Gordonstoun leavers has just completed a challenging six-month contract on a 19,000-acre farm in New South Wales having gained the tractor qualification.
We now have elite pathways for students pursuing a sporting career. Sporting partnerships, including the first one overseas with Dubai-based Gulf United football club, will create more competitive opportunities, supporting our most talented children.
Beyond Gordonstoun, the Development office has recently introduced a mentoring scheme offering more sustained skills and networking support for university students and those entering the Graduate jobs market, and for those choosing other career pathways.
After receiving guidance from an experienced alumni, a recent leaver with ambitions in drama gained valuable work experience on a Netflix film set, along with guidance for his application to the Royal Conservatoire Scotland.

As a British school located in Scotland, delivering an English curriculum alongside a highly international student body, Gordonstoun creates a unique environment for preparing young people to live and work in a diverse society. Students live alongside peers from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds, and this daily experience builds empathy, respect, and understanding in a very real and meaningful way.
We see the impact of this in how students learn to navigate difference, build relationships, and develop a strong sense of identity. Having full confidence in that identity allows passions to thrive - and ultimately supports students in pursuing a happy and fulfilling career path.
