The Enduring Lessons of The Odyssey

Following much excitement along the Moray Coast during the filming of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, we have at last been able to visit our cinemas to see the finished movie. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has brought one of history's greatest stories to the Moray coast, with scenes from Homer's epic filmed against the dramatic landscapes of the Moray Firth, including nearby Finlater Castle, Roseisle Beach and Culbin Woods. Beyond the locality of these filming hotspots, for us at Gordonstoun, there is a particularly meaningful connection. The sea has long been central to the school's identity. At the heart of the Gordonstoun emblem is a bireme, an ancient oared vessel associated with the maritime cultures of the classical world. While not necessarily the exact type of ship sailed by Odysseus, the bireme has come to represent qualities that have defined Gordonstoun for generations: courage, teamwork, leadership, resilience and a willingness to venture beyond the familiar.
In many ways, this reflects Gordonstoun's educational philosophy. Students are encouraged to step beyond their comfort zones, embrace the unfamiliar and discover what they are capable of achieving. Whether through outdoor education, sail training, expeditions, leadership opportunities or service to the community, the aim is not simply to reach a destination but to grow through the journey itself. This is a sentiment frequently echoed by Gordonstoun alumni. Looking back on their time at school, many speak less about individual achievements and more about the experiences that shaped them - the challenges they overcame, the friendships they formed and what they learned about themselves along the way. ChallengeChallenge sits at the centre of both The Odyssey and a Gordonstoun education. Odysseus and his crew face storms, shipwrecks, loss and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Their journey is defined not by the absence of difficulty but by their response to it. Through adversity, character is revealed and resilience is forged. Gordonstoun embraces the same belief. Students are encouraged to take on challenges that stretch them physically, emotionally and intellectually. Whether leading a team, completing an expedition or learning new skills through outdoor and sail training experiences, they discover that growth comes not from avoiding difficulty, but from facing it with courage and determination. Like Odysseus, Gordonstoun students learn that the greatest rewards often lie beyond the horizon of what they thought possible.
Compassion“Above all, Compassion” - Gordonstoun Founder, Kurt Hahn Compassion is one of Gordonstoun's guiding principles, and it is a theme that also runs throughout The Odyssey. While Odysseus' story is often remembered for its adventures, it is equally a story about relationships, loyalty and responsibility. Success depends not only on strength and intelligence, but also on understanding others, earning trust and maintaining meaningful human connections. At Gordonstoun, compassion is woven into everyday life. Students learn the importance of empathy, mutual support and community, recognising that true leadership is measured not only by personal achievement but by the positive impact they have on those around them. The Odyssey reminds us that no meaningful journey is undertaken alone, a belief reflected in Gordonstoun's commitment to nurturing service centred global citizens who understand their responsibility to others.
ServiceA central lesson of The Odyssey is that actions have consequences and that individuals carry responsibilities beyond themselves. Throughout his voyage, Odysseus is repeatedly confronted with questions of duty, responsibility and sacrifice. The choices he makes affect not only his own fate but also that of those around him. Service has been a cornerstone of Gordonstoun since its foundation. Through community engagement, practical service and positions of responsibility, students learn that leadership is inseparable from a commitment to others. They are encouraged to use their talents not simply for personal success but to make a positive contribution to their communities and to the wider world. Just as Odysseus' journey is shaped by duty and responsibility, Gordonstoun inspires students to develop the character and confidence to serve something greater than themselves.
A Story Close to HomeAt first glance, an ancient Greek epic and a school on Scotland's Moray coast may seem worlds apart. Yet both are founded on the belief that character is developed through experience. The bireme on Gordonstoun's crest serves as a powerful reminder that life's most important lessons are often learned through challenge, adventure and service. Like Odysseus' voyage, a Gordonstoun education is not defined by the destination, but by the person one becomes along the way. It is therefore fitting that this modern retelling of one of humanity's greatest journeys should be filmed on the Moray coast, a place where the enduring values of courage, compassion and service continue to shape young people for the journeys that lie ahead. |
These same themes lie at the heart of The Odyssey. More than an adventure story, Homer's epic is a timeless exploration of character. Odysseus' journey is marked by uncertainty, setbacks and temptation, yet it is through these challenges that he develops wisdom, purpose and a deeper understanding of himself and others.
